Durbach started off strongly , taking a 7-4 and then a 9-5 lead before Coppinger, astutely lengthened the rallies forced Durbach into a string of errors, and fought back to trail 8-9. An unforced error by Coppinger gave Durbach game ball at 10-8 and catching Coppinger flatfooted , Durbach pocketed the first game 11-8. A determined Coppinger ran up a 9-5 lead in the second game before Durbach levelled matters at 9 points all. Coppinger again extended the rally and with a perfect volley took a 10-9 lead . A return into the tin by Durbach gave Coppinger the game at 11-9. Thereafter Coppinger stamped his authority on the match and moving Durbach all over the court and making use of deadly volleys won the next two games 11-3 11-4 to set up a clash in the final with second seeded Clinton Leeuw. Leeuw was involved in a tough tussle with third seeded Craig van der Wath, the victor in a 70 minute quarterfinal match with Western Province’s Zuko Kubukeli on Wednesday evening. Showing few signs of the strenuous battle, van der Wath edged through the first game 12-10 against his younger opponent, who is based in Bremen, Germany for 6 months of the year. Playing tighter squash Leeuw won the next two games 11-6 , 11-4. Van der Wath had other ideas and raced through the fourth game 11-5 in ten minutes to level the match at 2 games all. Fortunes seesawed in the decider but it was Leeuw who took the game and the match on his first match point at 11-6. In contrast the women’s semifinals were fairly tame affairs. In the first match, 3rd seeded Siyole Lusaseni, ranked 73 in the world waltzed through the first game 11-3 against her second seeded Western Province teammate Milnay Louw. Louw turned the tables winning t e second game by the same margin. Lusaseni wasted no time in taking the third game 11-4. The fourth game produced the best squash but Lusaseni made less errors winning the match on her second match point at 11-9. Lusaseni now meets Farrah Sterne of Northerns , presently ranked 1 in South Africa. Stern coasted through 11-6 11-3 11-5 against an out of touch 6th seeded Adel Weir Nunan. The play-offs for thirds and fourth positions in both the men’s and the womens’ events will be played on Saturday 31st from 9h45 followed by the finals. |
