Final Report – Midlands Ladder Tournament 2013
Men’s Ladder
The squash at the final round of the 2013 Midlands Ladder tournament was not for the faint hearted. There were some awesome matches in the men’s section, with most of the matches being extremely closely contested. Alan McGuigan (2) recovered from his loss in the previous round to defeat Steve Darch (5) 3-0, while Frank Bradford (4) also made light work of his match against club rival Mark Gouweloos (6) by beating him 3-0 as well.
Dave Teichmann (10) recovered from his small blimp last week to power his way past Brad White (12) 3-1 and Jaques DeVilliers (15) continued his move up the ladder with an extremely tough match against the steady and very experienced Wayne Marcus (9) with a 3-2 victory. Denis Harel (13) ended the tournament with a bang and a hard fought victory against Etienne van der Merwe (14), winning 3-2. Michael Craig (16) was our biggest mover in the men’s section, playing some impressive squash in beating the ever improving and hard running Darryn Pieters (11) 3-2, to finish up in 9th spot on the ladder. Andrew Brown (7) and Ed Baldrey (8) were also involved in an almighty tussle, with Ed having to come from behind to win 3-2 and finish at number 7 on the ladder. In the play off for numbers 1 and 2, Justin Gouweloos (1) continued with his great form of the past few years to beat Mick Gouweloos (3) 3-1 in a very entertaining match, that kept the decent sized gallery entertained right to the end with some scintillating squash. Mick must also be congratulated for playing his part and really making Justin work for his victory.
That concludes the ladder tournament for this year and I’d like to thank all the players for the manner in which all the matches have been played and for all the spectators who arrived every week to witness some top class squash. Please keep your eyes peeled for the entry form for the “Realise Academy” Midlands Closed tournament, which is open to players of all levels, right from 9th league to 1st league. There will as usual, be some great prizes up for grabs and players are guaranteed at least 3 matches and also loads of fun.
Cheers, Andrew
P.S – Rennisha and Janine, thanks for everything you have both done during the course of the tournament. It is much appreciated and I think that we make a formidable team and reckon that the Closed Tournament is going to be the biggest and best experienced yet.
